Abstract
298,939. Krishnamurthy, P. Oct. 17, 1927, [Convention date]. Hydrocarbon resins.-Resins are obtained by treating benzyl chloride or like aromatic chlorine derivatives with zirconium or ferric chloride. Toluene is chlorinated in presence of sunlight or a catalyst and the purified product dissolved in carbon disulphide. A small proportion of zirconium tetrachloride (prepared by heating zirconium oxide or baddeleyite in a current of chlorine saturated with carbon tetrachloride) is added and hydrochloric acid. is evolved, a reddish brown liquid being produced which is mixed with water and treated with steam to remove carbon disulphide, boiled with water and dried. The product is a yellow solid which is powdered, extracted several times with benzene or coal-tar naphtha. and the clear solution is evaporated, the residue being then heated to 260‹ C. It may be used as a substitute for shellac. Its properties may be modified by incorporating with it a condensation product obtained from the same starting material by the action of aluminium chloride: or it may be incorporated with different proportions of indiarubber, gutta-percha, or similar materials in a solvent which is afterwards removed. When ferric chloride is employed instead of zirconium chloride, the product should be carefullv freed from iron by repeated treatment with acids.
