Abstract
Hydrogenation catalysts consisting of or containing metallic nickel, cobalt, copper or iron which have been poisoned with sulphur, selenium, tellurium or phosphorus or compounds thereof are revivified by treatment with a solution of a per-acid of molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, chromium or phosphorus or a salt thereof and then washing and drying. The revivified catalyst may subsequently be reduced with hydrogen. The solution of a per-acid or a salt thereof, made by the action of hydrogen peroxide on the appropriate acid or salt, may contain excess hydrogen peroxide. In examples a poisoned nickel-on-kieselguhr catalyst is treated at 100 DEG C. with sodium permolybdate or sodium perchromate solution. Hydrogenation reactions in which the catalysts are employed are the hydrogenation of benzene, naphthalene, phenol, cresol, xylenol and unsaturated glycerides; the production of liquid products from carbon monoxide and hydrogen; and the synthesis of ammonia. Specification 644,240 is referred to.
