Abstract
a -Nitro naphthalene is catalytically reduced to a -naphthylamine by heating it with agitation in an autoclave in the presence of water, a catalyst and hydrogen. The product is filtered while hot from the catalyst and the a -naphthylamine allowed to separate out on cooling. The hydrogen may be employed under reduced or increased pressure, preferably at a pressure of 4-5 atmospheres, and water-gas may be used instead of hydrogen. A finely-divided metal such as nickel, cobalt, copper or iron, or an oxide thereof is employed as catalyst and may be mounted upon a carrier such as charcoal, pumice or quartz. The starting material should contain no organic halogen, sulphur, selenium or tellurium compounds. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 16936/13 and 135,510.
