Abstract
Formamide is obtained by the interaction of carbon monoxide and ammonia under a pressure of not less than 20 atmospheres and at a temperature exceeding 100 DEG C. Catalysts such as pumice, clay, earthenware, alumina, metals, especially copper, or water may be used. In the presence of larger proportions of water, ammonium formate or a mixture thereof with formamide is produced. The reaction is effected in an autoclave capable of withstanding high pressures and not made of iron or tin. The process may be operated in a continuous manner, and diluent gases, such as hydrogen or nitrogen, may be employed. Examples of the process are given.
