Abstract

In the production of ammonia from cyanides which have been produced by the fixation of free nitrogen in a mass of base, carbon and a metallic catalyst, the reaction mass is discharged without cooling below the reaction temperature into the autoclave in which it is to be treated with water, with exclusion of air, and a gas not containing free oxygen is maintained above the liquid in the autoclave, thus obviating the danger of explosion of liberated hydrogen.
