Abstract

Alkali metal cyanates are obtained by heating alkali metal carbonates with ammonia and carbon dioxide or a compound resulting from the combination of ammonia and carbon dioxide without the splitting off of water, such as ammonium carbamate or carbonate, under conditions in which urea is capable of being formed. Preferably the reaction is carried out under a pressure of at least 50 atmospheres at temperatures up to 400 DEG C. The crude or purified cyanate may be heated to temperatures above 400 DEG C., for example 900 DEG C., with reducing gases such as hydrogen or may be treated as described in Specification 307,778, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], to produce cyanides. The water set free during the cyanate producing reaction may be removed from the pressure vessel by allowing a part of the vapours to escape during the reaction and replacing them by fresh ammonia and carbon dioxide. At the end of the reaction water and unconverted ammonium carbonate are removed by heating under normal or reduced pressure. The ammonia may be introduced in the liquid form. Examples are given.
