Abstract
333,453. Varga, J. Oct. 13, 1928 [Convention date]. Hydrogenized organic compounds, catalytic production of.-Naphthalene is hydrogenated at high temperature and under high pressure (preferably above 100 atmospheres) in presence of a catalyst consisting of a compound of molybdenum or tungsten, or both, in conjunction with 1-10 per cent of hydrogen sulphide which is stated to increase the activity of the catalyst. It is stated that when naphthalene and hydrogen are heated in presence of a catalyst there is a critical temperature usually lying between 400 and 500‹ C. at which a sudden absorption of heat occurs. Treatment above this temperature favours the production of benzene hydrocarbons, whereas if the temperature is maintained below the critical point tetrahydronaphthalene and dekahydronaphthalene are the principal products. High partial pressure of hydrogen favours the formation of benzene at the higher temperatures and dekahydronaphthalene at the lower ones; low partial pressures result in the production of homologues of benzene or of tetrahydronaphthalene, according to the temperature.
