Abstract
280,924. Schering-Kahlbaum Akt.- Ges., (formerly Chemische Fabrik auf Actien vorm. E. Schering). Nov. 16, 1926, [Convention date]. Addition to 276,010. Phencls; cyclohexanols.-The process of the parent Specification is conducted at temperatures substantially higher than the usual hydrogenation temperatures, that is to say, at or above 280‹ C. Thus, the condensation product of mcresol and acetone, when treated with hydrogen under pressure in the presence of a nickel catalyst at a temperature of 280‹ C., yields thymol and then stereoisomeric menthols according to the duration of the treatment; under similar conditions the condensation product of p-cresol and acetone gives first 4-methyl-6-isopropylphenol and then a mixture of the stereoisomeric 4-methyl-6- isopropylcyclohexanols. The starting materials are prepared by the process described in Specification 273,684.
