Abstract

285,833. Schering-Kahlbaum Akt.- Ges., (formerly Chemische Fabrik auf Actien, vorm. E. Schering). Feb. 22, 1927, [Convention date]. Addition to 273,684 and 279,856. Thymol ; menthol.-Thymol is separated from the hydrogenated condensation product of crude cresol with acetone by means of fractional distillation, preferably in vacuo, accompanied if desired by freezing-out. According to the example, the condensation product from crude cresol and acetone is hydrogenated by the process of Specification 273,685, or after previous thermal decomposition by the process of Specification 279,855, and the resulting mixture of thymol and p-thymol subjected to fractionation, preferably in vacuo, when the thymol appears in the higherboiling fractions and is isolated therefrom by freezing-out. Specification 273,686 also is referred to. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the separation of menthol from the mixture of isomers obtained by continued hydrogenation of the condensation product of crude cresol with acetone, and includes an example according to which the condensation product is converted by heat into a mixture of 3- and 4-methyl-6-isopropylenephenols, which is then hydrogenated under pressure with the aid of a manganese-containing catalyst until the absorption of hydrogen is complete; the resulting mixture is fractionally distilled, preferably in vacuo, and the m-menthol separated from the higher-boiling fractions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
