Abstract

279,856. Schering-Kahlbaum Akt.- Ges., (formerly Chemische Fabrik auf Actien vorm. E. Schering). Oct. 26, 1926, [Convention date]. Addition to 273,684. Phenol-ketone condensation products.-Crude cresol, comprising a mixture of m- and pcresol, is condensed with aliphatic openchain ketones in the presence of gaseous hydrochloric acid at a temperature below 100‹ C. When acetone is the ketone component, the products may be separated by solution in ether, or the mixture may be hydrogenated to give isomeric thymols or menthols. According to the example, crude cresol and acetone are saturated with gaseous hydrochloric acid and heated together: after blowing off the excess cresol with steam, the residue is preferably distilled in vacuo and yields a resinous material. From an ether solution of the resin, the mcresol-acetone product crystalises out leaving the other product in solution. Specifications 273,685, 276,010 and 279,855 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes the condensation of crude cresol with ketone in general in the presence of a condensing agent. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
