Abstract

Ion-exchanging substances suitable for softening water are obtained by treating coal or anthracite with a current of gaseous sulphur trioxide, or a mixture containing it, at a temperature not exceeding 250 DEG C., and preferably not exceeding 150 DEG C., the reaction being stopped before there is any appreciable formation of free carbon. The treatment may be carried out in a water-cooled rotary drum through which the coal and gas are passed in opposite directions. The product is washed and dried at a temperature of 30 to 40 DEG C. The coal may be caused to react with as much as ten times its weight of the sulphur trioxide and the weight of the coal may be increased by as much as 60 per cent.
