Abstract
547,580. Ion exchange materials. CROSFIELD & SONS, Ltd., J., FURNESS, R., and WALLING- TON, R. May 2, 1941, No. 5753. [Class 46] [Also in Group IV] Coal or lignite is oxidised by means of air or oxygen at a temperature below that at which destructive decomposition or carbonisation takes place prior to treatment with a sulphonating agent. Brown coal, anthracite or bituminous coal may be used. The products are iron exchange materials and may be used for water softening. In examples, temperatures of 180 to 230‹C. are used for the oxidation and sulphonation is effected by means of a stream of air and sulphur-trioxide, and by means of oleum in tetrachlorethane.
