Abstract

Sulphonated derivatives of polymerized styrene or polymerized alkyl derivatives of styrene are used as emulsifying agents.ALSO:Polymerized styrene and polymerized alkyl derivatives of styrene are sulphonated; the products may be used as emulsifying, wetting, or dressing agents in the textile industry and for tanning purposes. In an example, a polymerized styrene, made by heating styrene to 150 DEG C., is dissolved in carbon tetrachloride and sulphonated with chlorsulphonic acid. Polymerized styrene may also be sulphonated by treatment with hot concentrated sulphuric acid.
