Abstract

A dihydroxypyrene is obtained by removing the two sulphonic groups from the dihydroxypyrenedisulphonic acid obtainable according to Specification 441,408, by heating in a neutral or acid aqueous medium. According to examples, the dihydroxypyrenedisulphonic acid is heated in aqueous sulphuric acid, and in water, in an autoclave to give a 3 : 5-dihydroxypyrene.
