Abstract

552,018. Tanning. HOUGH, A. T. Sept. 15, 1941, No. 11783. [Class 76] In making leather by the treatment of skins with colloidal silica the skins are also treated either before or in the silica tanning bath with a minor proportion of a a synthetic sulphonic acid or allied sulpho compound. The sulpho compounds which are most effective for the purpose are uncondensed and of low molecular weight. The baths may be buffered with soluble phosphates. An example describes the use of toluene sulphonic acid as a pretreatment followed by tanning with acidified sodium silicate. Specifications 17,137/15, 276,014, [both in Class 76], and 465,674, are referred to.
