Abstract
Soluble nitration products of lignin are produced by contacting nitric acid with lignin (obtained by hydrolysis of cellulosic material such as wood by mineral acid without the application of heat) in suspension in a water immiscible organic liquid which is inert towards said nitric acid by intimately admixing said lignin suspension with nitric acid. The latter preferably has a specific gravity not substantially less than 1,48 and the reaction is preferably effected at temperatures not exceeding 28 DEG C. The nitric acid may be introduced in admixture with the dispersant. Suitable organic liquids are carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulphide and methylene dichloride. Suitable ratios by weight of lignin to nitric acid are 100 to 30, 100 to 40 or in the range 100 to 70 to 100 to 80.
