Abstract

The process for the production of titanium by the interaction of titanium tetrachloride and sodium in an inert atmosphere in a reaction vessel at a temperature between the freezing point of sodium chloride and 1000 DEG C., as described in the parent Specification, is modified to comprise the permitting of excess titanium tetrachloride to be present at a temperature above 600 DEG C. for such period as whenever the reaction vessel contains an inconvenient number of oversize aggregates of titanium until the vessel is again free from any oversize aggregates. The vessel for carrying out the process is described in the Specification. Spherical titanium pellets, of diameter 1/8 -\ba3/8 inch may be introduced with the TiCl4 into the vessel.
