Abstract
An aluminium nitride which is stable in moist air is obtained from an AIN, which has been fully annealed by heating in the presence of N2 at atmospheric pressure, by pulverizing, e.g. using Al2O3 balls, and reheating to above 1600 DEG C. in N2 at subatmospheric pressure, e.g. between 10 and 50 mm. Hg. The N2 may be present as an atmosphere or a current of gas. The annealed AIN may be obtained by heating AIN produced by heating Al2O3 and C in NH3 or N2, or by heating Al in N2. The stable pulverised AIN can be hot-pressed at temperatures of 1800 DEG -1900 DEG C. and pressures above 100 Kg./sq. cm. (e.g. 300 Kg./sq. cm.) to form a compact body.
