Abstract
905,657. Stressing silica. THERMAL SYNDICATE Ltd. Dec. 7, 1960 [Dec. 8, 1959 June 22, 1960], Nos. 41644/59 and 21817/60. Class 56. The surface of a sample of vitreous silica is stressed by heating the sample in an atmosphere having a partial pressure of water vapour which is in marked dis-equilibrium with the constituent water content of the sample. Examples are as follows:-heating low-constituent water content silica in pure steam at 850‹ C. for 18 hours giving compressive strain; heating moderate constituent water content silica at 1000‹ C. for several hours in an atmosphere at a higher partial pressure giving extensive strain and heating high constituent water content silica in a substantially dry atmosphere for several hours at 1000‹ C., giving a compressive strain. The first Provisional Specification also includes the subject-matter of Specification 905,658.
