Abstract

Denitrification of steel to decrease the ageing tendency is achieved by annealing in an atmosphere of nitrogen, hydrogen and water vapour within a temperature range extending for 100 DEG C. below the minimum temperature at which decarburization occurs. A preferred temperature range is 500-600 DEG C. and the gas mixture desirably contains more than 40% of hydrogen. One composition described consists of 75-80% hydrogen, 0.5-5% water vapour, balance nitrogen.
