822,958. Treating wood. IROSZERGYAR. March 7, 1956 [March 9, 1955], No. 7102/56. Class 140. A process for the manufacture of pencil wood from non-cedar woods comprises subjecting green non-seasoned limewood, alderwood or wood of common conifers to the effect of saturated moist steam at a pressure of between 3-5 atmospheres applied such that a temperature between 130‹ and 150‹ C. is reached in 3-5 hours and is retained for between 6-14 hours after which steaming the wood is cooled gradually in from 3-5 hours. The wood may be subjected to the process in the form of the original logs or planks, and the pencil slats may thereafter be prepared by sawing the already improved and softened material. Alternatively grooved slats made of green wood may be treated according to the invention. In an example, a steampressure cooker is charged with green non- seasoned planks of limewood, steam of about 3 atmospheres pressure is introduced and the supply adjusted so that the temperature rises gradually in 3-4 hours to 133‹ C. at which level the temperature and pressure are maintained for 9 hours. Thereafter the steam supply is cut off and the temperature and pressure are adjusted so that the contents of the cooker cool down gradually in 3-4 hours to room temperature. The cooled planks are removed from the cooker, dried and sawn into grooved pencil slats. As a result of the process the compression strength of the green wood and its swelling and contracting capability are reduced, its sharpening quality is improved and its colour is transformed into a brownish hue.
