Convention date, Feb. 8, 1934. [Class 140] Wood is seasoned and darkened in colour by subjecting it progressively to the action of heat in an atmosphere of steam under pressure up to a final temperature of 160-220‹ C. The treatment may start with steam at low pressure, e.g. 10 kg. per sq. cm., the pressure being progressively increased in the space of 4-24 hours to 16-20 kg. per sq. cm. Saturated steam may be used. Blocks &c. containing both heartwood and sapwood when treated assume a uniform colour. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the heat-treatment of the wood in an inert atmosphere or an atmosphere of vapour or gas under pressure, a final temperature of 170‹ C. being mentioned. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
