Abstract

A substantially amorphous polymeric linear terephthalate ester film is biaxially stretched at 80 DEG -180 DEG C. to produce a film extended by 3-4 times the original dimension of the film in one direction and by above 4 and up to 6 times its original dimension in the direction at right angles thereto, the final difference between the extent of stretch in the two directions being at least 1,0, and heat-set at 150 DEG -240 DEG C. Polyethylene terephhalate film may be so treated. Preferably, the film is stretched by 3-4 times in one direction at 80 DEG -90 DEG C., and by above 4 and up to 6 times in the second direction at 120 DEG -180 DEG C. After being stretched in the first direction the film may be partially heat-set at 90 DEG -130 DEG C., before being stretched in the second direction. Desirably, the second direction is the longitudinal direction of the film. Films so treated exhibit the enhanced unidirectional properties of films treated according to the parent Specification.
