Abstract
The physical properties of linear terephthalate ester film are improved by stretching the substantially amorphous film at a temperature of 80-120 DEG C. from 1,5-3,0 times the unstretched dimension in one direction and from 3,7-5,0 times in the direction transverse to that of the first stretch, and heat-setting the stretched film at a temperature of 150-200 DEG C. under tension. After the first stretch the film may be restrained from shrinking in this direction while being stretched transversely, or alternatively the film may be stretched more than is required in the first stretch and allowed to shrink to within the specified limits during the transverse stretch. Specified linear terephthalate esters from which the films may be made are those derived by reacting a glycol of formula HO(CH2)nOH, where there is an integer of 2-10, with terephthalic acid or an ester-forming derivative thereof or a low molecular weight alkyl ester thereof, e g the dimethyl or diethyl ester, with or without up to 20% by weight (based on the weight of terephthalic acid or derivative thereof) of a second acid or ester thereof, said second acid being isophthalic, diphenic sebacic, hexahydroterephthalic, adipic, azelaic, naphthalic, or 2 : 5 dimethyl terephthalic acid or bis-p-carboxyphenoxy ethane Examples of the treatment of polyethylene terephthalate film are given.
