Abstract

Modified polyethylene terephthalates, suitable for the manufacture of fibres having good dyeability, high shrinking power and an automatic crimping effect are made (1) by esterifying 1 mole of a dihydric alcohol of formula <FORM:0977104/C3/1> where R is a methyl, methoxy or ethyl group and A is an aliphatic group containing at most five chain members some of which may be oxygen or sulphur atoms with more than two moles of terephthalic acid (or an ester-forming derivative thereof such as dimethyl terephthalate) and (2) adding a mixture of a diester of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol to the reaction product and esterifying and polycondensing the mixture to obtain a product containing the branched dihydric alcohol in an amount of 1-12% by weight calculated on the terephthalic acid. Specified branched dihydric alcohols are 2:2-dimethyl - 1:3 - propanediol, 2:2 - diethyl - 1:3 -propanediol, 2:2-dimethoxy-1:3-propanediol, 3:3 -dimethyl-1:5-dihydroxy pentane, 2:2-dimethyl-1:3-bis -(beta-hydroxy-ethoxy)propane and bis-(hydroxymethyl - sulphonyl) - dimethylmethane.
