Abstract

<PICT:0780375/IV (a)/1> Polyacrylonitrile fibres having a scaly surface are obtained by extruding an aqueous saline solution of a polymer containing at least 85 per cent of acrylonitrile into an aqueous coagulant at 15-100 DEG C., removing the so-formed fibres from the coagulant after a residence time of 0.1 to 3 seconds and, at any stage of the process while the core of the fibre is still plastic, stretching the fibre to rupture the initially coagulated sheath, residual salt being finally extracted from the fibre by, for example, washing with water. The coagulant may be water, wet stream at 100 DEG C., an aqueous salt solution, a dilute acid or an aqueous mixture of an organic, water-miscible, coagulant such as acetone, methanol or ethanol. Stretching may be effected during or after coagulation, preferably after treatment of the fibres in another aqueous bath at a lower temperature, and may be effected in aqueous baths, in air or in wet steam.
