Abstract
Artificial filaments of high tenacity are obtained by coagulating the extruded viscose filaments in a dilute acid bath containing sulphuric acid and also sufficient metallic sulphates to delay the decomposition to cellulose hydrate, and then stretching the filaments by passing them round rollers rotating at progressively increasing speeds, while preventing them from rubbing or slipping on the rollers, after they have left the coagulation bath, in the presence of hot dilute acid at a temperature of at least 60 DEG C. The incompletely decomposed filaments may be passed through a bath containing hot dilute sulphuric acid, or they may be subjected to the action of steam or hot gases such as air which heat up the acid from the coagulating bath adhering to the filaments. After the stretching in presence of acid, the filaments may be washed with hot or cold water and stretching may be continued during the washing. The process is applicable to the production of continuous filaments or of staple fibre. The filaments after being stretched may be passed to a cutting machine. The coagulation bath preferably contains zinc sulphate in addition to sodium sulphate and sulphuric acid. In an example viscose is extruded into a bath containing 9,5 per cent of sulphuric acid, 4 per cent of zinc sulphate and 20 per cent of sodium sulphate at 50 DEG C. The coagulated filaments are led from the bath directly to and around a roller, then through a bath containing 1,5 per cent of sulphuric acid and small quantities of sodium sulphate and zinc sulphate at 95 DEG C., then round a second roller rotating at a higher speed than the first, and they are collected in a centrifugal box. Specifications 149,295, 239,254, 274,521, [all in Class 2 (ii)], 289,028, [Class 120 (iii)], 298,548, 309,053, 335,605, [all in Class 2 (ii)], 340,138, 342,027, and 370,943 are referred to.
