Abstract

In the production of filaments or films by coagulation of an aqueous polyvalent metal salt-containing solution of a polymer containing at least 85 per cent of polyacrylonitrile, the filament or film, before drying, is immersed in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble sequestering agent for the polyvalent metal ions in the salt contained in the coagulated filament or film, until the salt content is reduced to a negligible value, and the filament or film is then dried. The coagulation of the filaments or films may be effected by extrusion of the solution into water, acid or dilute brine, followed by cold or hot stretching or both, with following or intervening treatment with water or other coagulant to reduce the salt content to 2-5 per cent. After the final wet stretching treatment, and before drying, the filaments or films are passed through an aqueous solution of the sequestering agent. The preferred agents include the alkali metal salts of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid and of polyphosphoric acids. The metal ions which may be removed from the filaments include zinc, calcium, magnesium, tin, aluminium, antimony, arsenic and bismuth. In the example a solution consisting of 7 per cent by weight of polyacrylonitrile, 31.6 of zinc chloride, 23.2 of calcium chloride and 38.2 of water is extruded into water at 15 DEG C. to form a tow of filaments which is cold-stretched in air, stretched in wet steam, washed for 10 seconds in water, and passed through a 10 per cent solution in water at pH 8 of the tetrasodium salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid for one minute. The treated fibres are suitable for use in making woven or knitted goods.
