Abstract
Artificial threads of cellulose hydrate of high dry and wet tenacity and high extensibility are obtained by extruding viscose into an acid spinning bath containing sulphuric acid in a concentration of not less than 7 per cent together with sodium sulphate, and if desired a sulphate of a divalent metal such as zinc or magnesium, passing the threads directly on leaving the spinning bath but before complete regeneration, over a roller into a regenerating bath of hot water or a hot salt solution, then over a second roller rotating at a sufficiently higher speed than the first roller to stretch the threads by at least 45 per cent in the hot bath, and then leading the threads under loose tension to a winding up device. Viscose of low degree of ripeness and made from ripened or unripened alkali cellulose may be used. The threads may be reeled without tension or passed into a centrifuge where in drying they are free to shrink. They may be subjected to a chemical finishing treatment before entering the centrifuge. Specifications 335,605, [Class 2 (ii)], and 342,027 are referred to.
