Abstract

To permit the operations of washing &c. and drying to be carried out on the material in an unstretched state while still obtaining a soft lustrous viscose silk, there is used a coagulation bath containing not less than 200 grams, preferably not less than 230 grams, of sodium sulphate per litre, a proportion of sulphuric acid which in relation to the sodium sulphate is insufficient to convert all of the latter into bisulphate, and zinc sulphate in a proportion not less than 5 grams per litre. The proportion of zinc sulphate is preferably adjusted according to that of the sulphuric acid; thus, with 100 grams per litre of sulphuric acid there is used 10 grams per litre of zinc sulphate, with 110 grams sulphuric acid 15 grams zinc sulphate, and with 135 grams sulphuric acid 25 grams zinc sulphate. In an example, the coagulation bath is made up of 110 grams sulphuric acid, 250 grams sodium sulphate and 15 grams zinc sulphate per litre. The silk may be spun according to the centrifuge method, and the cakes may be either rewound in the moist acid state into hanks and washed and dried while hanging freely, the after-treatment if desired following directly the first washing, or they may be washed, after treated and dried without rewinding, in which case stiffening bodies for supporting and stretching the cakes are not employed.
