Abstract
334,838. British Celanese, Ltd., Roberts, R. P., Dean, R. I. R., and Gregory, L. W. May 9, 1929. Cellulose esters and ethers, processes for making filaments and films from.-Filaments, threads, films, &c. are made by extruding organic solutions of organic derivatives of cellulose into coagulation baths consisting of strong solutions of mineral acids, for example, strong aqueous solutions of sulphuric, hydrochloric, or phosphoric acid, or into solutions of acid esters of mineral acids such as ethylsulphuric acid or mono- or di-ethylphosphoric acid. As a modification, the filaments, films, &c. are extruded into any suitable coagulation baths, and are thereafter carried into a hath containing an acid ester of a mineral acid. The coagulated products are preferably given an " air-run," and are then, in order to avoid destruction by prolonged contact with the acidic substances, freed from the latter by washing with water either alone or with the addition of an alkali or a base. As regards the strength of the acid, concentrations of sulphuric acid less than 20 per cent shoutd be avoided; concentrations of 30-50 per cent are preferred; with the higher concentrations the products become more and more straw-like which is of value in the case of ribbons; similar results are obtained if the period of immersion is increased. To the acid and acid ester baths there may be added glycerine, glucose, or other sugars, alcohols or sulphonated oils, or solvents or latent solvents as described in Specification 179,234. The filaments &c. may be put under tension during spinning or during the subsequent treatment, or they may be subsequently stretched or dried under tension. In examples, acetone solutions of cellulose acetate are extruded into 30, 32, 40, and 46 per cent of aqueous sulphuric acid baths, and are subsequently passed through a bath of dilute ammonia solution, and are then washed and dried under slight tension, the products obtained with the most concentrated acid hath being much duller than those given when 32 per cent sulphuric acid is used; an acetone solution of cellulose acetate is spun into an aqueous diacetone alcohol bath and on emerging passed into an aqueous solution of ethylsulphuric acid.
