Abstract

508,781. Artificial silk &c. POTTER, E. (Akt.-Ges. f³r Verm÷geusverwertung) Nov. 26, 1937, No. 32746. [Class 2 (ii)] Artificial silk, spun fibres, and horsehair, and also bands, films and the like, are prepared from alkaline solutions of phosphoproteins or conjugated proteins to which have been added saturated or olefinic unsubstituted aliphatic carboxylic acids having 3 to 9 carbon atoms, or their derivatives such as eaters or amides, with or without aliphatic amines or amino acids. Propionic, heptylic, n-caprylic and n-caproic Acids are specifically mentioned as acids, which are added in proportions of from 0À5 to 3À5 per cent by weight of the protein, while n-propylamine, allylamine, or n-butylamine in proportion of 8 per cent may be used as the amines.. A small quantity of carbondisulphide in the-proportion of 2 to 5 per cent by weight of the protein may be added. Numerous other additions and after-treatments are referred to. Thus, vinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, poly. vinyl alcohol, titanium dioxide, butadiene, olefines, sulphonated olefinic alcohols, aldehydes, phthalic anhydride and glycerine, form; aldehyde and urea, phenols, and other substances which form condensation products with one another or with the protein may be added to the spinning solution or, case of dry spinning, may be passed as vapours in countercurreht to the thread or film.. Acid vapours, for example of hydrochloric acid, may be similarly employed in dry spinning. The threads &c, may be hardened by formaldehyde or synthetic or natural tanning agents or by subjecting them to the action of light from a mercury vapour lamp, and their capacity for dyeing may be increased by .treatment with amines or amino acids. In an example, potash lye is added slowly to a paste of. acid casein and carbon disulphide, propionic acid, and n-propylamine added. The solution is then spun into a precipitating bath of sulphuric acid, and the thread dried under tension and hardened in a formalin bath.
