Abstract

852,291. Stapling tow. HIRAKO, R. Jan. 29, 1957 [Feb. 20, 1956], No. 3177/57. Class 120(3). A tow 3 is divided by drafting into randomlyarranged fibres of substantially equal length by passing the filaments with their ends arranged at random from slow back feeding rollers 1 to faster front rollers 2, treating the filaments at a point 5, near the back rollers to weaken them and treating the filaments at 6 between this point and the front rollers to restore their strength, whereby as the end of each filament is presented to the front rollers, a tension is applied to the filament causing it to break at the point in its length at which it is then weak. The point 5 may be in front or behind the rollers 1, and the treatment thereat may be with steam, hot air, volatile liquid or high-frequency heating, and the treatment at 6 may consist of drying on a hot-plate.
