Abstract

1375585 Lap formers: non - woven fabrics JOHNSON & JOHNSON 21 Jan 1972 [21 Jan 1971] 3060/72 Headings D1N and D1R A method of forming a non-woven web in a lap forming machine having two separate sources of fibre which are supplied to respective lickerins 317, 338. The fibres are doffed from the lickerins by respective airstreams through passages 344, 346 which then intermix in region 334 before being condensed on a foraminous belt 381. A separating member 400 is extensible between the separate fibre carrying airstreams to control the degree of intermixing and hence the distribution of fibre types through the thickness of the produced web. The lickerins are clothed and are rotated suitably for the fibre types being handled, e.g. a rayon bat 335 and a pulp board sheet 310. Also the doffing air streams are controlled, e.g. by the adjustable member 360 in duct 346. The fibre carrying airstream leading to the web forming surface is sealed thereto by rollers 369 and spring biassed seals (376), Fig. 4 (not shown), and is finally exhausted through duct 289. WEB. A web produced by the above method has a predominance of one fibre type on each surface and a transition zone therebetween. The thickness of the transition zone is controlled by advancing the dividing member 400, Fig. 6. The apparatus can also produce uniformly homogeneous webs or layered webs as can the aparatus which is claimed together with the above described apparatus in Specification 1,375,584. The following fibres are referred to as being suitable for producing webs by the above methods and apparatus: short fibres of: wood pulp, cotton linters, asbestos or glass; long fibres of: vinyl chlorate, vinyl acetate, nylon 6, nylon 66, viscose staple rayon, cupra-ammonium rayon, saponified esters, cellulose acetate, cellulose triacetate, acrylic, polyester, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, fluorocarbon, e.g. polyetetrafluoroethylene, cotton, flax, jute, wool, silk, ramie, or protein. Suitable methods of subsequent bonding of the web disclosed are: web saturation bonding, foam bonding, print bonding, fibre bonding, fibre interlocking, spray bonding, solvent bonding, viscose bonding and mercerization. Suitable bonding agents disclosed are: hydroxyethyl cellulose, melamine formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde, acrylic resins, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acrylate, polyethyl acrylate, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl butyral, cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose.
