Abstract

808,287. Paper containing synthetic resins etc.; agglutinated fibrous sheet materials; laminates. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Jan. 2, 1956 [Dec. 31, 1954], No. 112/56. Classes 96 and 140. A sheet material comprises oriented crystalline structural fibres of an ethylene terephthalate polymer bonded with a substantially unoriented ethylene terephthalate polymer binder, the polymer of both the fibres and the binder being a linear polyester containing a preponderance of ethylene terephthalate in the chain and capable of existing in a crystalline form. The binder may be used in the form of particles or fibres. Glycols and dibasic acids which may be present in minor amount in the polymer are: trimethylene, tetramethylene, hexamethylene, diethylene and propylene glycols, and sebacic, suberic, azelaic, adipic, oxydivaleric, and ethylene bis p-oxybenzoic acids. The binder may be used in the amorphous form and caused to crystallize by heating. The structural and binder fibres may be mixed and sheeted by carding, garnetting, paper-making processes, by blowing or dropping staple fibre or filament in wet or dry condition upon a surface, or cross-lapping continuous filament. The fibres, which may be crimped, may be between<SP> 1</SP>/32 inch and 8 inches long. A bath may be made of several layers of oriented fibre and the binder particles or fibres spread or sprinkled between the layers. Bonding is effected by heating, e.g. by a heated roll or in a press. The bonded product may be coated with polyvinyl chloride, cellulose nitrate or acetate, ethyl cellulose, a copolymer of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile or polychloroprene, and the coated product may be adhered, as a bathing, to paper, or fabric Specifications 578,079, [Group IV], and 712,950, [Group IV (a)], are referred to.
