Abstract

550,717. Unwoven fabrics. AMERICAN REENFORCED PAPER CO. April 16, 1941, No. 4963. Convention date, April 16, 1940. [Class 140] A self-sustaining unwoven material has a layer of strands 2 extending in a generally parallel direction adhesively secured to filaments 4 crossing the strands and extending along one side of the layer without crossing to the other side to form a thin self-sustaining reticulum, the strands being unspun and fibrous and secured to the crossing filaments in widely and irregularly spaced relationship. The filaments 4 may be spun threads and arranged approximately at right angles to the strands. They may be all on one side of the strands or alternatively on opposite sides. The strands may be of sisal, jute or ramie and the filaments of the same materials or of spun cotton or of paper. The adhesive may be asphalt or latex or thermo-plastic adhesive in powdered form dusted on to the sheet and plasticized by heating. The sheet may be used instead of burlap in the manufacture of punched felt fabrics.
