530,369. Compound sheet materials. EDWARDS, A. E. Feb. 17, 1939, No. 5423. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1938. Drawings to Specification [Class 140] Electric insulation consists of a thin layer of mica having on one or both sides a web, mat, or fabric of fibrous glass. The glass fibres may be produced as described in Specification 428,720, [Group XXIII], and maybe formed into a matted web by depositing them in haphazard criss-cross relationship on a conveyer belt. A small amount of starch, agar agar, casein, latex, or resin may be applied to bind the fibres, or the web may be strengthened by tensioning as it leaves the conveyer. The web is laid against and bonded to a layer of mica splittings, a similar web being subsequently applied to the other side, if desired. The compound sheet may be calendered and impregnated or coated, e.g. with insulating varnish. A compound sheet consisting of a mica layer covered on both sides with a fibrous glass web or cloth may be split in half through the mica splittings to produce two compound sheets.
