[Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A mat of long fibres such as sisal has applied to its surface a thermo-setting or thermoplastic bonding material in such quantity that the dry weight of the bonding material is less than the weight of the fibre and is then consolidated into a shatterproof sheet &c. by heat and pressure. The loose fibre matting A<SP>1</SP> is fed by rolls 6 and belt 5 between apertured plates 3, 4 where it is needled by barbed needles 2 causing some of the fibres to be pushed through the mat in the form of loops 8 resulting in a stiffer mat A<SP>2</SP> of reduced thickness. Bonding material is then applied to the mat in limited quantity, by the liquid resin glue spreader, Fig. 6, comprising corrugated rubber-covered rolls 10, idler rolls 11 and pipes 12 for supplying liquid resin 9 to the troughs formed by the spreader and idler rolls, suitable resinous materials being urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde laminating varnishes, vinyl resin solutions, natural gums, latex emulsions, recovered rubber dispersions, casein or casein-blood albumen solutions. A suitable blank of the material is cut and consolidated by heat and pressure into a sheet &c. A<SP>3</SP>, Fig. 8. The bonding material may contain fillers such as wood flour, wheat flour, silica, china clay, calcium carbonate. Two or three of the needled mats may be coated on the outer surfaces with the bonding material and compressed into laminated sheets.
