Abstract

589,621. Multiply-ply corrugated cardboard. EXPANDED RUBBER CO., Ltd., and COOPER, A. Dec. 18, 1944, No. 25384. [Class 96] Building board of low thermal conductivity and high wet and dry strength is made by soaking corrugated cardboard &c., e.g., passed as two webs 1 through a bath 3, in a binding medium, e.g., phenol- or cresol-formaldehyde syrup, urea- or melamine-formaldehyde glue, polyvinyl chloride paste, natural, synthetic, or reclaimed rubber adhesive, cellulose lacquer, casein glue, carpenters' glue, or bituminous materials, excess being drained or brushed off, and passing the cardboard 1 through a drying chamber 6, heated at 7 and through which air is circulated, the cardboard being cut into sheets and stacked with the corrugations of adjacent sheets at right angles and compressed between the platens of a multi-daylight press with " picture-frame " or distance-pieces to prevent the corrugations being crushed. The press may be heated to cure the resin or vulcanize the rubber. The cardboard &c. may be fireproofed by soaking in borax, ammonium chloride, tricresyl borate, triphenyl borate, or tricresyl phosphate. Urea-formaldehyde may also be added to the paper pulp in the beater.
