[Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A stiff single ply or laminated sheet or other article consists of an unwoven mat of long fibre bonded together by a relatively small amount of resinous material mainly concentrated at or near the surface of the mat. The fibre mat A<SP>1</SP> which is preferably' of raw sisal and may comprise a number of layers 1 is fed by a roll 6 and endless band 5 between apertured plates 3, 4 where it is subjected to a needling operation by needles 2 acting to draw some of the fibres into loops or bights 8 and to consolidate the mat as at A<SP>2</SP>. The solution &c. of resinous material is then applied, such as urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde varnishes, thermo-plastic adhesive materials such as vinyl resin solutions, natural gums, latex emulsions or recovered rubber dispersions. The coatings are then dried, and the material subjected to pressure giving a final product A<SP>3</SP>, Fig. 5, with the bonding material 9 mainly concentrated at the surfaces. Two or three of the needled mats may be coated on the outer surfaces with the bonding material and compressed into laminated sheets.
