Abstract

617,268. Fabrics composed of fibres agglutinated by adhesive; paper-board. CARBIDE & CARBON CHEMICALS CORPORATION. May 16, 1946, No. 14782. Convention date, May 29, 1945. [Classes 96 and 140] [Also in Group XXXII] A resilient pad comprises a core and a rubber-like covering integrally bonded with the surface of the core, the core consisting of a "crushed" mixture of pulped newspaper or wood pulp of average individual fibre length not in excess of about 0.03 inch and finely divided palmetto pith, powdered cork or hibiscous wood and an organic binder; and the covering comprising natural or synthetic rubber or synthetic resin. By "crushed" is meant the application of high pressure for a brief period followed by the immediate release of pressure. The "crushing" may be applied to the pad either before and/or after the covering is applied. Preferably the core is "crushed" by a pressure of from 250 to 1,500 lbs. per square inch and after the application of the covering a further pressure of from 50 to 750 lbs. per square inch applied. The core is made by forming a slurry of the above components which is then either formed into a continuous fibrous sheet as in a paper-making process or the slurry is run into moulds of the desired core shape, the water drained off and the remaining matrix dried. When the slurry is formed into a continuous fibrous sheet the sheet may be cut to give a final pad of the desired thickness or several sheets may be cemented together for example, with rubber cements, glue or phenol-formaldehyde adhesives. The covering may be applied to the core by dipping or spraying on a dispersion, solution, or a melt of the desired natural or synthetic rubber or synthetic resin and the applied coating may contain plasticizers, vulcanizing agents and accelerators. After coating the pad is dried and if desired vulcanized. The rubbers may be latex or reclaimed rubber; the resins may be resins based upon butadiene, vinyl chloride, styrene and co-polymers of vinyl acetate. The pads may be used as kneeling mats, cushions and vibration dampers.
