Abstract
1451786 Gas/liquid contact body CARL MUNTERS AB 9 Oct 1973 [19 Oct 1972] 46981/73 Heading B1R A contact body for gas and liquid is obtained by a process comprising securing a plurality of sheets of fibrous material together to form a body, in a manner such that passages extend between adjacent sheets of the body and from edge to edge of the body, and providing the sheets, either before or after they are secured together with a thin coating of an impregnating agent which imparts wet strength and simultaneously water-repellant properties to the sheets, and incorporating in the coating water-insoluble powder particles that project partially above the surface of the coating to form capillary recesses between the particles, whereby when a liquid engages the coated sheets, it is spread immediately into a continuous film over the fibres and interspaces between the fibres. The sheets may be of mineral wool, or of glass, vegetable animal or asbestos fibres or other inorganic fibre material or an organic fibre material such as cellulose fibres. Preferably the sheets are at least partially corrugated. The impregnating agent may be a plastics material such as a thermoplastic, e.g. synthetic rubber or a thermosetting material such as a melamine or phenol resin. Suitable powder materials are siliconecontaining materials such as silica gel, molecular sieves and kieselguhr.
