Abstract

1437081 Laminates comprising bonded fibrous material K KICHLU 11 May 1973 [11 Feb 1972] 6545/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A laminate comprises a backing layer and a layer of natural animal or vegetable fibres having an average length of at least 3 inches adhered to the backing, the fibres having been pressed into sheet form and being held together by 3 to 20% by weight of the fibres of a cured resin in the fibrous layer, which resin may also impregnate the backing. The backing may be paper, cardboard, cloth, hardboard or chipboard or a batt of natural fibres. The fibres may be "hard" fibres, i.e. leaf fibres such as sisal, manilla hemp and copra. Alternatively ramie or jute fibres may be used. The majority of the fibres may be 8 to 12 feet long. A layer of the fibres can be formed by embedding a sliver or tow of the fibres in beeswax, allowing the wax to set and cutting a "slice". Alternatively a mass of the fibres, optionally mixed with 1 cm. long crimped polyester fibres is needled or bonded together. The fibres may be woven into a fabric. The fibrous layer may be formed on the backing or on a release paper. Thus a 1 fibre thick layer of parallel adjacent fibres may be laid on the backing by hand or in a continuous process in which a chipboard backing is moved along a production line and fibres are laid and the fibres and board sprayed with resin. The backing can be sprayed with resin before the fibres are deposited. The fibrous layer is laminated to the backing by hot pressing, e.g. 250 to 230 lbs./in.<SP>2</SP> at 150‹ C. for 8-10 minutes. In one embodiment a backing layer is sandwiched between 2 fibrous layers containing resin a smooth plate placed below one layer and brown paper or corrugated cardboard placed above the other layer and the layers hot pressed to give a laminate with one smooth and one uneven surface. Alternatively suitably surfaced rollers may be used to laminate. The resin may be a urea, melamine or phenol formaldehyde resin or a polyester resin. Ammonium chloride may be used as curing catalyst. Sufficient resin may be used to completely embed the fibrous layer. A lacquer of polyurethane, nitrocellulose or melamine may be applied to seal part or all of the fibrous surface. The laminates are used as wallpaper, floor coverings and simulated wood products. The backing may have a pressure sensitive or heat or water activatable adhesive on its rear surface.
