Abstract

1380004 Sized yarn HOLLANDSE SIGNAALAPPARATEN NV 4 July 1972 [5 Oct 1971] 31187/72 Headings DID D1F and D1W In a method for the manufacture of yarn from a roving of staple fibres consisting of at least two components one of which contains a size, the roving is wetted to activate the size drafted and dried. The completion of the sizing process may be carried out under increased temperature e.g. using a steam treatment. In a preferred embodiment, a roving 1 is taken from a package 2 and fed via guides 3 through a bath of water 4 which may contain a wetting agent. The wet roving is then drafted between pairs of rollers 5, 6 and 7, 8 to form a fibrous sliver 9 which is false-twisted by means 10 and cross-wound on a package 12 by means of pressure roller 13 and traversing mechanism 11. The cross-wound package 12 is then steamed to complete the sizing and cooled. The activation of the size component may take the form of expanding, gelatinising or partial dissolving, the activated size component forming a bond with and between the other fibre components. The yarns obtained may be twist-free or have a relatively low twist. The fibres which do not form the "sizing agent may be selected from cotton, polyamide, polyester or stabilised polyvinyl alcohol fibres. The fibres which do form the sizing agent may be selected from unstabilised polyvinyl alcohol, alginate, or di- and tri-acetate.
