Abstract

1,183,381. Stretch breaking elastomeric tow. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 27 Feb., 1967 [6 July, 1966 (2)], No. 9141/67. Headings DID, D1F and D1W. A yarn consists of, or a blended yarn comprises elastomeric fibres stapled by a stretching- breaking process. The stretch-breaking is facilitated by heat-setting a multifilament tow of spandex or natural or synthetic rubber in a stretched state so as to reduce its elongation at break and to increase its Young's modulus and/or by converting the tow into yarn in a modified direct spinning machine. The machine either has an upper and lower apron positioned between the stretching breaking rolls and driven at a speed between that of the rolls, or an upper apron extending around the top front breaking roll and a lower apron extending into the drafting zone with an upper apron also being provided in the drafting zone. In the stretch breaking zone the aprons are adjustably pressed together to control the point at which the tow breaks. If a blended yarn is to be produced a roving of cotton, wool, flax, jute, silk, regenerated cellulose, a polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, polyester, polyvinylchloride or polyvinylalcohol is fed into the drafting zone. In the blended yarn the elastomeric fibres predominate in the core. The full elasticity is substantively restored to the fibres by subjecting the yarn or a fabric made therefrom to a hot water or steam treatment. The yarn may be covered by, or plied with a yarn of non-elastomeric fibres or filaments, or be core spun with non-elastomeric fibres.
