The yarn appearing on the outside of an elastic, plated, fabric is one spun from staple fibres of which more than half are of a synthetic linear polymer or polymers; and the yarn plated on the inside is a stretch, continuous filament yarn of a synthetic linear polymer (e.g. a polyamide). The spun yarn is fed at normal tension and the stretch yarn under sufficient tension substantially to remove the crimps or coils therein. The ground yarn may be spun on the silk system substantially wholly from a synthetic linear polyamide. A balanced plating yarn may be formed by doubling two stretch yarns which have been initially twisted in opposite senses. The stretch yarn may be produced by a process involving twisting, setting and back-twisting. In an example, 1¢ denier 5-inch nylon staple fibre containing 15 crimps per inch was spun into 20's cotton count yarn on the silk system.. Two such yarns were folded together with 1/3 the limit of the singler yarns, but in the opposite direction. The folded yarn was then set by subjection to steam at 25 lb per sq. inch for 20 minutes. 30 denier multi-filament nylon continuous filament yarn was twisted to 90 turns per inch, the twist was set and the yarn was then untwisted to zero turns: thus the yarn was converted into stretch twist yarn form. These yarns were fed to a 21-gauge knitting machine, the silk-spun yarn, at normal tension as the ground yarn and the stretch yarn, at such tension as would straighten it, as the plating yarn. The resulting fabric is stated to resemble a cashmere fabric.
