Abstract

1342017 Producing linen yarns NETHERLANDS APPLIED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FOR INUDUSTRY TRADE & COMMERCE 27 April 1971 [28 April 1970] 11575/71 Headings DID D1F and D1W In the manufacture of unsized linen yarns from a fibre strand 2, e.g. a sliver or a roving, which has been produced by subjecting flax to mechanical operations to produce fibrous material, processing the fibrous material into a strand, and subjecting the fibre strand to a chemical treatment that decomposes the fibrous material and brings naturally present bonding agents therein into a form suitable to bring about mutual joining of the fibres, the fibre strand 2 is fed to a drafting device while substantially saturated with water 5, the strand 2 running into, through and out of the drafting device in an upward direction, and being delivered from the first pair of rollers 7, 8 of the drafting device while still containing 200-350% by weight of water and being fed from the drafting device at a speed of at least 50 m/min, the strand is then false-twisted, e.g. by fluid jet 16, immediately after drawing and the twisted strand is wound up on a winding device 18, 20 whose peripheral speed of rotation is substantially equal to the delivery speed of the drafting device. The drafting device comprises a pair of feed rollers 7, 8, one roller, preferably the driven roller 8 being corrugated, and the other roller 7 being a smooth resilient roller, e.g. having a rubber belt 9. The drafting device preferably comprises two such roller pairs, the resilient roller 11 of the second pair being provided with a doctor blade 14 to remove loose fibres. The false-twisted yarn produced is dried on the package 19. The yarn has a flattened crosssection and is suitable for use in weaving and knitting to produce waterproof and windproof fabrics, e.g. tent cloth.
