Abstract

568,675. Composite yarns. RAYNER, G. F. (Sylvania Industrial Corporation). March 12, 1943, No. 4031. [Class 120 (iii)] A composite yarn is formed by associating two or more strands together at least one of which comprises potentially adhesive fibres, activating the potentially adhesive fibres before weaving or knitting sufficiently to render them tacky so that adjacent strands even though one is of non-adhesive material are bonded together but do not form a continuous surface coating on the yarn whereby untwisting is prevented while the yarn remains substantially flexible. A strand 1, Fig. 1, of potentially adhesive fibres passes from a spool 2 through pressure rollers 3 and axially through a driven spool 4 from which a strand 5 is wound spirally around the strand 1 to form the composite yarn 8. When the composite yarn is heated sufficiently to render the fibres of strand 1 tacky but insufficiently to destroy the filamentary form the spiral wrappings of strand 5, Fig. 2, are bound together and prevented from becoming displaced on the strand 1. Alternatively the strand 5 may comprise potentially adhesive fibres and the strand 1 nonadhesive fibres. The yarn 1 may be pretwisted to counteract the twist imparted by the covering strand 5 while a second strand may be applied thereover. In a modification, a filament 14 may be passed through the nip of the last pair of drawing rollers 13 of a series 11, 12, 13, Fig. 3, and a roving 10 twisted thereabout by a traveller 17. Alternatively the strand 14 may be twisted about the roving 10 while in a further modification the strand 14 is fed downwardly to contact the roving 10 adjacent the surface of the lower roller 13. In another form the composite yarn comprises a plied yarn formed from a number of strands passed through a common guide and then twisted about each other and wound on a spool by a traveller. Specifications 501,436, 538,865, 552,130 and 552,131 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 552,130 and 552,131.
