Abstract

A pile fabric is produced by raising a pile on a fabric containing a major proportion of polyacrylonitrile and which incorporates a latent solvent, i.e. a substance which may be activated to become a solvent for the fibres, for polyacrylonitrile and subsequently activating the latent solvent whereby adjacent polyacrylonitrile fibres are bonded together. The polyacrylonitrile fibres may be crimped or uncrimped. The term "polyacrylonitrile" includes homopolymers of acrylonitrile and copolymers containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile units. Specified monomers suitable for copolymerisation with acrylonitrile are styrene, methyl acrylate, itaconic acid, methallyl sulphonic acid and its salts, vinyl acetate or vinyl pyridene. Suitable latent solvents are di-substituted formamides such as bis-cyanoethyl formamide, tetra-methylene sulphone and propylene carbonate. The solvents are preferably activated by heat. The invention is applicable to raising piles on non-woven, woven and knitted fabrics. The latent solvent may be applied to the fabric at any stage prior to the pile raising, e.g. by spraying onto knitted or woven fabric or by drip feeding staple fibres prior to forming into a non-woven fabric. The solvent may be applied to the facing surfaces of two waddings before they are built up into a single fabric. If the non-woven fabric is built up as a sandwich construction having a central scrim then the latent solvent is applied to the scrim prior to assembly of the fabric. The solvents may be applied undiluted or as solutions, preferably aqueous solutions. Preferably, the weight of solvent applied is less than 10%, e.g. between 1 and 5%. On knitted or woven fabrics, the pile is raised by passing the fabrics over brushing rollers and, on non-woven fabrics, the pile is raised either by brushing or by needling using forward or reverse barbed needles.
