Abstract

An aqueous emulsion of a synthetic elastomer having a Defo value of at least 5000 and a substantially straight-chain structure is used for treating fibres or material produced therefrom, such as fleeces, woven or knitted materials or paper. Treatment may comprise coating, impregnating or bonding. A list of suitable elastomers is set out in the Specification. The following compositions containing suitable elastomers are described in examples: (a) compositions comprising butadiene acrylonitrile copolymer, o-tolyl biguanide, colloidal sulphur, active zinc oxide, 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, p,p1 - dihydroxydiphenyl, diphenylamine, condensation product of b -naphthalene sulphonic acid and formaldehyde, boric acid, alkyl naphthalene sulphonate (sodium salt), mixture of fatty alcohol sulphonate with alkyl benzene sulphonate (sodium salts), casein; (b) composition comprising butadiene acrylonitrile copolymer, reaction product of oleyl alcohol with ethylene oxide, mixture of fatty alcohol sulphonate with alkyl benzene sulphonate (sodium salts), tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, colloidal sulphur, active zinc oxide, di-b -naphthyl p-phenylenediamine, condensation product of naphthalene disulphonic acid and formaldehyde; (c) composition comprising copolymer of butadiene, acrylonitrile and methacrylic acid, casein, sodium salt of alkyl aryl sulphonate, zinc salt of ethyl phenyl-dithiocarbamic acid, benzimidazole; (d) composition comprising urea formaldehyde condensate, copolymer of butadiene, acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, zinc salt of 2-mercapto-benzothiazole, alkyl naphthalene sulphonate (sodium salt), 2-mercapto benzimidazole; (e) composition comprising copolymer of butadiene, styrene, acrylic acid nitrile and methacrylic acid, and auxiliary agents as mentioned under (d) above. Elastomers having Defo values within the specified range may be prepared by emulsion polymerization carried out in the absence of molecular weight regulators. The compositions may be foamed by beating. Specifications 716,178 and 716,228 are referred to.ALSO:An aqueous emulsion of a synthetic elastomer having a Defo value of at least 5000 and a substantially straight chain structure is used for treating fibres or material produced therefrom, such as fleeces, woven or knitted materials or paper.
